Frequently Asked Questions

Listed below are answers too many questions around the selling and valuation of businesses

Q: What is my business worth?
A: No straight answer here I'm afraid. By definition it's worth what a willing buyer and willing seller can agree. There are rules of thumb which for some specific types of business can give a guide to their approximate 'market value', however this can vary greatly dependant on individual circumstances.

Q: What's involved in selling my business?
A: At Returns.net.au we adopt a five stage approach;

  1. Audit and Evaluation - Exit readiness assessment and initial valuation
  2. Proposal - Details work required to be carried out to maximise the sale price (and improve on the initial valuation) as well as the value of the work required to complete this.
  3. Preparation - Preparing the business for sale - not unlike a fresh coat of paint on a house prior to sale - we can undertake to do a range of tasks covering systems, customers, employees and finances.
  4. Marketing - This phase involves using our extensive networks to market the business and qualify potential buyers to the client
  5. Sale & Settlement - Deposits, contracts and settlement phase

The whole process can take anything from three months to three years depending on the scale and complexity of the preparation phase and how much of the business is already systematised and/or who the targeted buyers may be.
